It’s about changing the preconception about shipping
At the age of six, I wanted to be a pirate. How little did I know that I would meet real pirates in my professional life? Meet Ursula Dockerty, Emergency Response Team Leader at Shell International Trading & Shipping Company Ltd, a Master Mariner passionate about the maritime industry.
She is amazed by seafarers creativity and resilience. Without them, the rest of the society would have come to a standstill during the pandemic.
Of course, we discuss the importance of role models. For example, Ursula just knew she wanted a career at sea and was very persistent about making that happen. But what about young people today? Do they see any of the career paths available to them? Do they watch movies or videos showing cool, inspiring people from the maritime industry?
We have a job to do. We need to show more of the maritime world to the general public and children in particular. Some of them might want to become emergency response leaders.
